INTRODUCTION

Coffee is an important cash crop in Papua New Guinea, involving about a third of the population in its production. For many of the Highlands districts it is the major income earner of the local economy. However in many areas there are issues in production and marketing that reduce the profitability for the farmers, with the result that they are not getting a good return for their work. This project will improve the returns for coffee growers in the Baiyer Valley.

AIMS

The project aims to: 1. Target grower needs through a plant nursery with seedlings for new varieties of coffee, and demonstration of new cultivation and harvesting techniques; 2. Demonstrate options for supplementary crops to reduce dependence on the single cash source; 3. Establish a trading company to trade on behalf of the growers, working to get them a better return for their crop; 4. Target the market chain through the provision of market information to growers, and improved marketing services.
